Acropolis Museum In Pictures
Greece’s new Acropolis Museum, designed by celebrated Franco-Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi, has finally been unveiled after years of delays and legal wrangling.
The thee-level building displays more than 350 artefacts and sculptures that were previously held in a small mudeum by the Acropolis.
The museum is opening its doors to the public for a short while for a nominal one Euro.
The museum will be able to welcome more than 10,000 visitors every day.
A 2nd Century BC male marble statue is among those displayed in the new museum, which faces the ancient Acropolis.
Other works of art on display include a 2,600-year-old marble statue of a youth.
Five of the original six late 5th Century BC Caryatid sculptures that once propped up part of the ancient Erechtheun temple on the Acropolis are on display. The six in London.
Invites international dignitaries, including the Turkish head of state, attended the museum’s opening ceremony in Athens. bbc.co.uk
